Chapter 22: Kieran

The portals opened and they came.

The guard jumped to the side to hide behind the mirror as a soldier wearing heavy armor stepped through the portal. Beside her, the other mirrors shimmered too, glimmering with the light coming from the other side.

And once my eyes adjusted to that bright light, my pulse quickened.

Hundreds of soldiers stood on a grass field. The portal was opened into some kind of a hill, which allowed me to see them despite the narrowed perspective. There, thousands stood, waiting for their turn to step right into the tower room we were in.

This wasn’t good.

If they were to come in, we didn’t stand a chance.

I drew my sword, taking up a defensive stance. The soldier who had entered ahead of me mirrored my action, weapon at the ready.

I did not know her, but the sheer confidence with which she gripped her weapon warned me of the impending challenge.

They are here! I shouted as loudly as I could without using my voice. They’re using the portals to come in. Take the prisoners out! Now!

Gethin says the portals are closed, Cari replied quickly as though she had been waiting in my mind. He cannot open them.

They will come through the portals, I said.

“We should break the mirrors.”

Cari’s approval echoed inside my mind.

It took me a moment to realize the words were said out loud.

When I looked to my side, I saw Casja.

Calm washed over me.

She was here.

“How?” I asked. “They’re blocking the mirrors.”

She did not meet my gaze.

Other soldiers had already stepped out of the portal. More were coming.

I felt the air around me becoming crisp with the cold. At first, I thought the tingling of my skin was the usual nervousness before battle, but then, small drops of ice appeared all over the room.

Casja’s hair lifted as the wind howled against it. She did not even move a finger as pellets of frozen rain crashed into the mirrors, breaking them into a thousand little pieces that exploded all around us.

The soldiers inside the room ducked to avoid the broken glass, and I shielded my eyes using my sword. The sound of mirrors breaking was deafening. A small piece cut through my cheek, but the adrenaline prevented me from feeling any pain. The only clue I had was the sensation of wetness as blood drizzled out.

For a moment, no one moved.

All the pieces of the mirrors were on the ground when the sound stopped. It only took a few seconds, but the soldiers shook off the shock rather quickly. They braced themselves for a fight, their expressions twisting in concern.

“What now?” Casja asked.

I thought she was speaking to me, but Cari responded quickly.

We broke all the mirrors inside the prison, she said. But more will be coming. We cannot leave quickly enough. We have protection inside the castle, we need to use it to stall them until we can open enough portals. The soldiers who are in the room with you... I sense them, but I cannot control them.
